Multimedia for Learning

Artifact 1: Instructional Video

Description

This is a video that introduces learners to the cultural impact of ancient Greece on the US.

Rationale

This artifact evidences my ability to produce sound, open instructional media. I wanted to create a video as an engaging introduction and multimedia component for my open textbook. I created a storyboard with text to narrate, learned about green screens, ensured good sound quality, and used iMovie to produce the video. Because OER is important to me, I made sure that this video used Creative Commons licensed images and background music and had captioning. I chose to publish the video on YouTube so that users can choose the video playback speed. I wanted to make sure the video wasn't too long and chunked information into 6 sections. I also kept Mayer's 12 Principles of Multimedia Learning in mind, reducing the talking head time and focusing on images with narration.

Artifact 2: AR and VR Experiences

Description

This artifact is a group of AR and VR storytelling experiences with built-in quizzes. I designed six experiences about key events in the story of Theseus and the Minotaur.

Rationale

This artifact shows my ability to create immersive educational experiences with built-in quizzes. I am very interested in AR and VR educational experiences. AR can be a great learning tool, using image triggers for language learning and enhancing print textbooks, and using GPS for tours and scavenger hunts. VR can be a useful tool for building immersive environments, manipulating virtual objects and simulations. I am more interested in AR as it is more accessible to the general public via mobile devices rather than the expensive equipment needed for VR, although my scenes can be seen in VR using Google Cardboard. Another issue with AR and VR is that there are not many platforms available that make it easy to design AR or VR experiences, especially ones with assessments. CoSpaces allowed me not only to create an immersive environment that can bring the story of Theseus to life, but also to have interactive assessments in the experience. My favorite scene is the labyrinth scene where you can actually go through the labyrinth and fight the minotaur. It makes an ancient hero story feel more exciting than just reading it!
